What we provide
Design and fabrication of fine cabinetry, furniture, and commercial cabinetry. We work closely with our clients, architects and designers to maximize the potential in their spaces. We pride ourselves in taking on challenging projects, exceeding expectations and focusing on customer service throughout the project.
Whether it's a large commercial contract or a private, custom project - we approach each job with the same attention to detail and thoughtful consideration for all the various factors involved (including time restraints, budget, other subcontractors, design specs, etc.). We are dedicated to the highest-quality work and design.
Building Together
We are Jay & Deb… a husband & wife carpenter team with a passion for woodworking and a belief in providing quality services. We created Together We Build, a family owned and operated custom cabinet shop that is committed to providing the highest quality cabinetry, custom furniture, built-ins and customer service to our clients. We are dedicated to serving our customers with personalized services created by skilled craftsmanship and attention to detail. We take pride in our work and it shows.
We offer services for residential and commercial projects. All projects are completely custom fabricated in our shop which allows us to offer an extensive range of styles, wood species and finishes to all our clients.
How we work
1.
Initial Consultation
We offer a no-charge consultation to discuss your project and provide a price estimate under no obligation. We invite you to take advantage of our years of experience to explore the possibilities for your space.
2.
Design Process
Once we have all the necessary information, we can provide a formal proposal with detailed costs and a timetable. If you are ready to move ahead with the project, we request 20% of the total payment to secure a slot in our calendar. We then schedule a follow-up to start creating your unique design and discuss the particulars of your project.
3.
Fabrication
We present 3D rendering drawings, photos, and/or sample materials. When you are happy with the final design, we are ready to build. Shortly before building begins, we require a 60% payment towards the construction of your project, including ordering materials. We craft your piece(s) in our Stratford shop.
4.
Installation
The majority of construction takes place in our shop; this minimizes the amount of time for installations so that there is as little disruption to your home as possible. When fabrication is complete we will arrive on a scheduled install date. At this time, we ask for the remaining balance of the total payment. When entering your house we treat it like it is our own and take extra care to protect your floors and walls. We leave your space clean and ready for use.

Have you ever thought about adding something π― custom and unique to your home? This desk sits right near the front entrance of our clients home so @housemattersinteriors came up with a fabulous idea to hide the desk behind sliding panels and make it look like a bookcase built in.
Did we pull it off???
Very excited to show you this beautiful white oak built in bookcase with a concealed desk.
Problem: The clients office is in the front of the house and open to the front entrance. She needed a way to cover her workspace when she had company over and easily be able to access her screens and desk when she was working.
Solution: a desk that looks like a built-in bookcase that has sliding doors to cover the double screens and pocket doors that open to the seating area.
We had a blast being able to collaborate with Lorna @housemattersinteriors once again and bring her vision to life!

This is a custom color we created by mixing @rubiomonocoatusa Slate Grey & Nordic White. The interior lights are a new sleek led strip light that does not have the beaded look most LED strips have and inlays into the cabinet by routing a 3/16 channel… no track or cover is needed.

We don’t always want to set up our Incra cross cut sled for just one cut so we picked up one of these table infeed extenders from @izzyswan_woodworking and it’s been a great addition to our shop. It’s small jigs like these that add so much to a smaller shop and really make a noticeable difference the shops efficiency. Also not imitating Michael Jackson π I had injured my hand at the time of filming this lol

We’re sure you know how working with white oak is hard enough given how prone it is to splintering but if you take the time to build a process, it will prevent ruining your project and will be worth it. Here we are cutting a radius in 2 3/4 solid white oak. Trying to remove a lot of material at once will certainly cause tear-out so first we cut a large portion of the wood off with a jigsaw and then gradually cut into the radius using a template. A heafty bit like this is a huge help as well. #togetherwebuild

We’ve done many commercial projects over the years and we love the way each one of them are so different.
In this project we had to spray all the cabinets with a tintless clear finish because the Reformers the client ordered had a very specific tone that the designer Lorna @housemattersinteriors wanted to match and pre-finished maple had too much of a warm tone to it.

This piece is so clean looking, we wanted to give the client a way to charge their devices without having any wires on top of the desk so we added a wireless charging pad inside (under) the desk that is able to charge through up to 1” of material.
The black locator pad you see there is optional but not needed. Once you get used to the location of the charging area you can take that off and just place your phone down in that location to charge.
You can find a number of these types of chargers on Amazon, just make sure you find one that will charge through the correct thickness of material you have. The one we used is an Amazon “Basics” brand and is highly rated. Worked well for us. Hope this helps!

We used lightweight MDF to offset the massive size of these mini shaker hidden pantry doors. The full length slides we used are from @hafeleamerica. They were pretty technical to install so we had our friend John at Cherb Construction come help. We think the final product came out pretty cool! Who wouldn’t want a hidden pantry like this?

When the idea of this piece was brought to us we jumped at the opportunity to add it to our portfolio and fell in love with the contrast of the classical black exterior against the maple interior. If you’ve ever painted a piece of furniture black…. You know the struggle of getting the finish to perfection… layers of topcoat (this has seven) and sanding in between every one is the key, and this is the result.

My Dad is a retired carpenter so I always knew a thing or two about woodworking, and Jay & I always loved doing house projects together so when the opportunity came up to build together.and start our own cabinet shop, we thought “why not”?!
Another component is the respect we have for each other as a couple but also professionally.
The stuff he’s not crazy about doing, I love, and vise versa. We both love building and it’s such a bonus to be able to do it as a team…

Fun project to restore this family heirloom!
When we were given this floating desk to restore its color was a dark blue... as we started to sand it we quickly relized that it was actually laminated and not painted. So we carefully removed the laminate with a heat gun, sanded for days and skimmed the box with bondo before spraying it this fabulous color. We had a piece we had to use that had an ugly factory filled knot. Since we were clear coating the inside of this cabinet, we needed to come up with a solution for this ugly knot. So Deb used acrylic paint to mask the factory filled knot to look like a natural knot, then we clear coated over it with lacquer. She used an inspiration knot off of another piece, it also helps that she’s a pretty talented painter lol.

We met in our high school photography class and became best friends (we even double dated lol) we started dating in 1990 and married in 1995. These white oak mini shaker panels came out pretty sweet. We used biscuits to join the frame to the panel and left just a sixteenth reveal on the back that we sanded flat to accommodate the hinges. What do you think? #togetherwebuild #minishaker #minishakerdoorstyle #customcabinetry #woodworking
@fastcapllc makes a FLATBACK CARPENTER TAPE MEASURE that’s made specifically for cabinet makers & custom woodworkers. It’s flat opposed to the traditional concaved tape measure so it’s flexible for measuring curves and flat panels with precision. We don’t use them in the field but we do keep a few of these in the shop at all times and we really like them. #togetherwebuild #woodworking #cabinetshop #tools

Custom bookcase wrapped fireplace with dog crates at the base of each side. This project had a lot of on site assembly because of the height and the scribe needed to fit around the stones. @hultafors_us sent us these marking pencils and we have to say after using them for a few weeks we really like them! Very durable and the grip is comfortable in your hand. One of our favorite features that puts this pencil over others for us is the way you sharpen it… you don’t have to take the holster out of your pocket in order to sharpen ππΌ The sharpener is right on the side of the holster! Super convenient and makes all the difference when you have your other hand holding a level etc. Def has become our shop favorite! #togetherwebuild #hultafors #shoptools #woodworking
We used the @uscribejig to make this detailed scribe fast and easy. Looks like it takes a ton of skill to accomplish but this little jig took all the difficulty out of the equation. If you don’t have a set already go check them out, two great guys making a fabulous product!

We use the lines of the shiplap to conceal the door seams top & bottom. The only seams that are visible are one hidden behind the tv and a very small reveal on the left side of the fireplace where you can pull the door open. We chose to put the pull notch on the side for easy access and to be less noticeable than the front.
- The shiplap also acts as a guide at the bottom for the door to slide on.
- On the left we mitered 2” pieces of shiplap that we we attached to the side of the door frame.
- The door frame is made from 1” x 2” pieces of maple & 1/2 maple ply as a backer for the shiplap to nail to
- The glide system we used was a simple bedroom closet rail that we cut to fit and adjusted to slide nicely.
- We added a stopper behind the door so it would not slide off the rail when open.

We use CutlistOptimizer.com to make our cultists, it immediately improved our efficiency and simplified the process of breaking down sheets for large projects ππΌ… now if we could actually work this fast, that would be a incredible π#togetherwebuild
